Congress Leader, Who Fat-Shamed Rohit Sharma, Defends Mohammed Shami Amid Roza Row
New Delhi: A row erupted after Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami was seen consuming an energy drink during the Champions Trophy semi-final match in Dubai after a cleric criticised Shami for not observing roza. Congress leader Shama Mohamed has now come out in support of Shami. Shama Mohamed has been at the centre of a controversy after she fat-shamed Indian skipper Rohit Sharma.
Defending Shami, Shama Mohamed said that Islam allows exceptions for fasting, especially for those engaged in physically demanding activities or travelling.
“In Islam, there is a very important thing during Ramzan. When we are travelling, we don’t need to fast. Mohammed Shami is travelling, and he’s not at his own place. He’s playing a sport where he can be very thirsty. Nobody insists that when you’re playing a sport, you have to fast… It is your deeds which are very important. It (Islam) is a very scientific religion,” Shama Mohamed told ANI.
The national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, said on Thursday that Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has committed a sin by not fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramzan. “In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal, he should not have done this at all,” the Barelvi cleric said.
“It is the responsibility of all Muslims to follow the rules of Shariat. Fasting is obligatory in Islam. If a person does not keep a fast intentionally, he is considered a sinner according to Islamic law,” Razvi said.

After Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 15 runs off 17 deliveries, Mohamed said, “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had.”
